A Babalawo is a priest of the Yoruba religion who specializes in divination and the knowledge of secrets. The title means “Father of Secrets” in Yoruba. The Babalawos are priests of Orunmila or Orula, the Orisha of wisdom who operates through the Ifá divination system. In addition, the Babalawo is trained in determining problems and applying secular or spiritual solutions to resolve them. Its primary function is to assist people in finding, understanding, and processing life until they experience spiritual wisdom as a part of everyday experiences. The Babalawo must help people develop discipline and character that support that spiritual growth.
